The name Kaffe Fassett was first associated with the knitting world. It seemed he came out of nowhere, his use of brightly colored, textured yarns achieving such quick popularity. Susan first saw him in Tokyo, Japan, in June 2002. He was the special guest at the retirement party for Mr. Seto, President of Nihon Vogue, and all the top Japanese quilters were in attendance. About a year later, Kaffe's first fabric collection appeared in Houston. |
Those early fabric designs were bright and bold like his yarns, but did not seem particularly "Japanese" to most people. With this latest collection, however, he gives us printed patterns that are unmistakenly borrowed from Japan — the Kasuri (ikats), the clouds, and the mums — in a very unusual and daring set of bold and bright colorways, except for the blue and white, which is classic and traditional. |
