Chirimen means "crepe" and has a slightly crinkly or bumpy texture. Originally used for silk kimono, it is now replicated in polyester as it is less expensive and wears better.

You may give color preferences in your "Special Instructions" when you place your order, but we regret we can not promise any specific choices will be available.

Naomi Itaya was a fabric collector with a special penchant for antique silk crepe kimono fabrics from the 18th and 19th century, now collectible even in the smallest remnant as "treasure." Itaya's designs on cotton were the first fabrics from Japan to arrive on the American quilt industry scene: huge, fabulous florals and traditional Japanese motifs in an unusual array of colors, like nothing we had ever seen. They were introduced with quite a fanfare in Houston in 1995.

Although she is no longer involved in the designing, her original designs "live on" as the company carries on production 12 years later. I cannot think of a Japanese designer with greater influence on the American quilt industry. Further, her fabric designs have not only greatly influenced the American quilt world, but now reach well into apparel and home decor from across Japan to across America, transformed from silk and polyester.
