48 1/2" w. x 66" ht. Japanese hand-dyed indigos and Japanese cotton yukata cloth; 1996. Machine pieced, quilted by hand. The folk toys which Americans know as "pinwheels" have a Japanese equilvalent that translates "wind wheels". Arranging the various striped fabrics against the indigos, it seemed to me as if the toys were twirling away in a night sky. (Photo by James Dee) |
