Fire in the Forest |

34 1/2" w. x 50 1/2" ht.
Both commercial cottons and mono-printed fabrics
by the artist. Machine pieced and hand quilted, 1997. While working on this piece, I was thinking:
"forest, fire and wind." After the piece was finished, I saw that the "fire" had other meanings as well
bringing to the surface a specific memory of a blazing mountaintop at the VERY peak of autumnal glory while visiting ancient Kyoto in November 1996. The quilting lines suggest leaf forms, now separated from the tree, carried about on a strong gust of wind.

My long time friend, Marian Wolbers, upon seeing this quilt, honored me with a Japanese haiku poem:
Crimson mountain-top
A single leaf drifts and hangs
Wind out of nowhere.
